Historic preservation commissions are instrumental in guiding the preservation of the historic resources and neighborhoods in their communities. These commissions are charged with interpreting and enforcing local preservation laws and regulations and work very closely with local leaders, city planners, architects, developers, and citizens to protect the character of their historic resources. This workshop will focus on the key issues that historic preservation commission board members regularly deal with, specifically in the areas of interpreting and enforcing a historic preservation ordinance, working with your zoning code, the landmarking process, and design guidelines for historic buildings and neighborhoods. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in a mock review board meeting illustrating how different actions from commissioners can influence the outcome of a project.
