Insider's Tour: St. Augustine's History & Heritage

Join us as we explore the culturally diverse heritage of St. Augustine, America’s oldest city! By the time Jamestown, Virginia, was settled St. Augustine was already 42 years old. Scroll down for the registration form at the bottom of the page.

Ponce de León first came to the northeast coast of Florida, possibly near St. Augustine, and called the area la Florida in honor of Pascua florida (feast of the flowers), Spain's Eastertime celebration. Pedro Menéndez de Avilés arrived in 1565 at a place he called San Augustín (St. Augustine), which marks the beginning of the First Spanish Period (1565-1763). You can learn more here.

Much of the locations on our tour are from this period, although we will also see the Second Spanish Period (1783 – 1821) and learn about other historic eras in this unique American city. A fabulous resource to learn more is the PBS series Secrets of Spanish Florida, which features Dr. J. Michael Francis, who will speak at our Opening Reception!
